What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Māori New Year, marked by the heliacal rising of the Matariki star cluster (Pleiades) in the eastern sky during winter. It is a time for remembrance of those who have passed, celebration of the present, and planning for the year ahead. In 2026, Matariki Day is Friday 10 July 2026.

Te Waka o Rangi · the celestial canoe

In Mātauranga Māori the stars of Matariki and the surrounding constellations form Te Waka o Rangi — the canoe of the sky. Matariki sits at the prow; Tautoru (Orion's Belt) trails behind as the stern; the cluster rises together each year as a single celestial vessel pulling the new year up over the horizon.

Matariki Herenga Waka · the 2026 theme

Herenga Waka — a place where waka gather. The 2026 theme invites every community, every workplace, every whānau into the celebration.
